BIRD #3 OF 45
Australian White Ibis
The Australian White Ibis is one of Australia’s most recognisable waterbirds. While it’s famous for adapting to city life, it naturally belongs in wetlands, floodplains and marshes, where it plays an important role by feeding on insects, crustaceans and other small animals.
You’ll often spot them slowly probing the mud with their long, curved bills.

Although they’re often nicknamed “bin chickens”, Australian White Ibises originally evolved as wetland specialists. Their success in cities is a clever adaptation after many of their natural wetlands were lost or altered.
